LAS VEGAS - A viewer asks why freeway message boards do not show speeds of traffic to warn drivers of slower speeds ahead.
This viewer used I-15, between Charleston Boulevard and Sahara Avenue as an example. Drivers along this stretch travel 65 miles per hour, then quickly must slow down to 20 miles per hour as they come down the hill.
Several states have message boards that display current speeds, but the Nevada Department of Transportation says Nevada does not have the laws in place to follow suit.
As far as warning drivers of slower speeds ahead, NDOT expects those messages will be included on some of its new equipment as part of the upcoming Project Neon, which will widen I-15.
The message boards will continue to display notices of accidents that impede traffic.
