8 on Your Side assists woman with money order mystery

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - For 14 years, Lynette Rabon stored her belongings at the Sunset Mini Storage. Since the day she started doing business with them, she has always paid with a money order from Check City. She never experienced a problem until a few months ago.

“He called me and said my money order bounced. I said, ‘My money order bounced?’” she said.

She went to Check City to get answers. Check City confirmed the money order was good; it had been cashed and went through.

Confused, Rabon returned to her storage unit. Instead of answers, she received a request for more money. She contacted 8 on Your Side.

8 on Your Side spoke with the storage facility, Check City, Western Union and Bank of America and figured out the problem.

The money order was cashed twice. 8 on Your Side investigated whether this was an honest mistake or if the storage facility was trying to scam more money from Rabon.

The area manager for Sunset Mini Storage told 8 on Your Side the manager who handled the situation has been let go. Sunset Mini Storage determined the problem stemmed from its check scanner which the business replaced.

The storage company credited Rabon’s account for all the late fees, gave her a free month's storage and awarded her a gift card for $25.

She says she is happy her problem has been solved.
