LAS VEGAS - A block party is coming to downtown Las Vegas. The first Wednesdays Downtown takes place Wednesday evening.

The street festival features music, food, art and entertainment. Fremont Street will be shut down between Las Vegas Boulevard and 6th Street for the festivities.

Fremont East Entertainment District spent three months creating the event. Organizers like Geoff Carter say events like Wednesdays Downtown help generate publicity for downtown businesses.

"I think this is the way forward, you know? We're trying to build the heart of the city here, and the more people who come down here to be part of it, the easier the work goes," he said.

Each business participating in Wednesdays Downtown will feature different events, including silent disco and karate karaoke. A painter’s lounge and food truck village will be available for younger attendees.

Tony Tabet is the owner of the award-winning Hummus Factory food truck. He says Wednesdays Downtown provides a great opportunity to gain name recognition for his business.

“I'm looking forward to a little mini-foodie fest happening, lots of families gathering around and hopefully making downtown more fun during the weekdays," he said.

Organizers say they chose Wednesday to give people a break from the workweek.

Wednesdays Downtown will take place every Wednesday in May and resume in September. Seventeen local businesses are participating in the event.
