Acts of Kindness: Dr. Raul Arteaga

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - Dr. Raul Arteaga has run Sahara Animal Hospital for 15 years. Known in the community as “Dr. A”, Arteaga has been a vet in the valley for longer than two decades.

He says his passion began when he was three years old.

“I had these big German shepherds. I used to ride them. They were really aggressive and yet, with me, so gentle. They basically adopted me,” he said. “I couldn't say the word ‘veterinarian’, but I said I want to be a doggy doctor, since I came from a family of human doctors.”

Today, he works seven days a week, but he says he doesn't consider it work.

“Four days is my job, and three days is my hobby. It's like the fisherman that goes fishing on his day off. I love it, and it's wonderful,” he said.

He treats his patients as his own family members, so you can imagine his horror when he watched a recent news report out of Florida.

“There was a fire in Florida. All the pets died, because there (were) no gas masks, oxygen masks,” he said.

He contacted local fire departments to find out if they had any masks on hand. He says they told him the masks were not budgeted. So, Arteaga and Puppy Love pet groomer Vicky Vittorino purchased nearly 30 masks to equip fire departments in our area.

“My goal is that every single truck could have at least one mask,” he said.

So far, he's provided masks for Henderson Fire Department and Las Vegas Fire and Rescue. He has masks ready for the North Las Vegas Fire Department.

“He's very shy. What he does really does come from his heart. It's really good,” said vet assistant Stephanie Murga.

8 News NOW is rewarding Dr. Raul Arteaga’s efforts by awarding him $800 as part of its weekly series Acts of Kindness.
