Las Vegas man gets year in jail in dog slaying case

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- A 22-year-old Las Vegas man was sentenced to a year in county jail and five years' probation in the thrill killing of the family dog.

Clark County District Court Judge Jerome Tao also ordered Tuesday that Jeremy Espiritu will wear an ankle monitor during probation and appear in mental health court after he gets out of jail.

Espiritu faces up to four years in prison if he violates terms of his sentence.

Espiritu underwent court-ordered psychological evaluation and was found fit for trial before pleading guilty in March to a felony attempting to kill an animal charge.

He admitted stabbing and slitting the throat of the black Labrador mixed breed named Serenity at his parents' home on Dec. 5.

The judge scheduled an Aug. 5 status check in Espiritu's case.
