County approves final number of pot dispensaries

Posted: Updated:
LAS VEGAS -- Clark County commissioners unanimously approved the number of medical marijuana dispensaries that will be allowed in the county.

Commissioners voted at their Tuesday meeting to allow 18 dispensaries in unincorporated Clark County. Twelve dispensaries will be allowed within the city of Las Vegas, four in the city of North Las Vegas, five in Henderson, and one in Mesquite. Boulder City rejected having a dispensary. The state will not allow more than 40 dispensaries in Clark County.

Commissioner Larry Brown said he hopes southern Nevada companies get the bulk of the business licenses up for grabs.

"I don't think anyone has disagreed adamantly as far as this is a new industry to southern Nevada. We want southern Nevadans to be at the front of the line." Brown said.

Commissioners say the arrived at the numbers that best reflected the population distribution.

"This isn't about getting as many as you can. If you look at the population and the intent of the law is to make the medicinal products available to the citizens." Clark County Commission Steve Sisolak said.

The commission also revealed there is no approved medical marijuana lab yet. The one application for a lab could not go through because it was determined it was too close to a school. The application process will be reopened with a deadline of 5 p.m. Friday, May 16. State law has determined a lab is necessary for the medical marijuana industry in Clark County.
