HESPERIA, Calif. -- The northbound lanes of Interstate 15 near the Cajon Pass opened to traffic at around 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, according to Caltrans. The southbound lanes are expected to reopen Wednesday. Southbound traffic is being re-routed at Joshua.

The freeway closed Monday afternoon after a fire destroyed an under-construction bridge near Hesperia, California, on the main route between Southern California and Las Vegas.

San Bernardino County Fire Capt. Josh Wilkins says a blowtorch being used by a construction worker ignited the wooden support structure of an overpass that was under construction.

Drivers are being told to use State Route 18 and State Route 138 as detours. Dozens of firefighters were battling the blaze in windy conditions, with limited access to water.

One worker suffered from smoke inhalation.
