Advocates want investigation into Nye Co. animal abuse case

Posted: Updated:

PAHRUMP, Nev. -- A case of animal abuse has been discovered in Nye County.

Dozens of dead cats and dogs were found inside a home in Pahrump. Now, animal welfare advocates are pushing for a full investigation.

Many of the details of what happened in the home are disturbing.

8 News NOW has learned the people living here were leasing the home and left back in December. They left the place a total mess.

Property managers discovered five dead cats in January, as well as a dead poodle. Just last week, workers gutting the place found anywhere between 12 and 20 dead animals were in bags inside an outdoor freezer.

Some of the conditions were so bad, it is not even appropriate to show the pictures.

Gina Griesen, with Nevada Voters for Animals, is pushing for a full investigation and wants justice for the animals forced to live, and die, in these horrible conditions.

"The conditions were so disgusting. Filthy, feces everywhere, junk, your worst imagination of what maybe a hoarder's home would look like," Griesen said.

"We're a pretty big county, we're spread out, we have very few animal control officers. Again, once they get things written up, get it to whoever it needs to go to, it will be investigated, it will be taken care of," Nye County Commissioner Frank Carbone said.

Nye County Animal Control is working with Clark County Animal Control.

Griesen says four bodies removed from this freezer were taken Monday to the Lied Animal Shelter for a necropsy, an animal autopsy. The big question she is asking, along with the Animal League Defense Fund, is why would anyone do this to these animals?

Investigators are going have a lot of questions for the people who lived here, and we're told the man who lived here may be living out of state.

Ultimately, someone could face criminal charges.
