8 on Your Side examines growing problem of 'revenge porn'

LAS VEGAS - Las Vegas’s reputation as “Sin City” is well known. Sexual images and innuendos can be found throughout the valley, but one Las Vegas-based website is offering more than sex. It's doling out revenge and humiliation and costing some people their jobs.

A woman who calls herself “Jane” says she is one of thousands of victims of revenge porn or the practice by some people of posting naked pictures of their ex-lovers online.

“I felt like I was being bullied by the entire world,” she said. It's like online rape.”

Her naked pictures landed on a website called MyEx.com. Within weeks, this young mother says her life was turned upside down.

Men from around the country started stalking her on Facebook, Twitter and e-mail, because the poster linked Jane’s information to the pornographic website.

I just completely shut down. I couldn't leave my house. I was scared,” she said.

She had little recourse, because it's all legal. Nevada has no laws regarding revenge porn. Federal law protects revenge porn websites from liability, because the sites’ administrators do not provide the content.

Jane turned to police for help, but didn’t receive any.

“’If you don't want those kind of pictures on the Internet, don't take those kinds of pictures,’” she said police told her.

She spent months trying to get the pictures removed, but she says the pictures continually pop up online. She now lives in hiding because of what someone did to get revenge.

I just can't look at the world in the same way. I can't trust people the same way. I am always afraid someone is going to recognize me. How long will this follow me?” she said.

Six states have outlawed revenge porn in some form. Two more states are considering legislation. Critics, however, say the laws do very little, because they only go after the people who upload the content. The websites that publish the images are protected.

8 on Your Side found dozens of local women posted on these sites. Many sites will take the pictures down for a fee, but cannot promise the pictures will remain off the sites.

A revenge porn victim can also try to sue the person who posted the pictures. Court rulings in Texas and Ohio have produced large judgments for the victims.
