Duckling in drain pipe rescued

Posted: Updated:
LAS VEGAS -- A duckling rescued from a Las Vegas storm drain will eventually live at the Gilcrease Nature Sanctuary.

The Clark County Fire Department used special rescue equipment Tuesday to retrieve the duckling. Firefighters were alerted to the situation when some women walked into the lobby of the fire department building to say they had witnessed a mother duck and her two ducklings walk over a storm drain on Flamingo Road and the two little ones fell through the grate.

The drop was about 15 feet and there was a foot of water in the storm sewer complicating the rescue. Las Vegas Fire and Rescue sent its Confined Space Rescue Team to assist in the rescue. The rescuer was able to locate and capture one of the ducklings. There was no sign of the other baby duck.

The duckling was taken to Paradise Pet Hospital.
