Acts of Kindness: Samantha Corey

Posted: Updated:
LAS VEGAS - Dancing is the way 17-year-old Samantha Corey lets loose.

“It’s just a stress reliever. It’s my one safe zone I go to and express all my emotions,” she said.

She spends several hours each day at the Pointe Dance Center, and it's pretty obvious she has the passion and energy for it. She says what she sees in the mirror today is a free spirit, much different than the vision she saw not long ago.

“I saw a normal, plain brunette girl. I didn't see anything special,” she said.

“She was a bubbly, smiley, happy girl, but last year, something happened,” said Pointe Dance Center owner Donna Frias.

“I started suffering with anorexia my freshman year. For about a year, I lived in this zone where I was torturing myself,” Corey said.

“She became very thin, stopped talking to people. She almost fainted while she was dancing a few times,” Frias added.

A panic attack finally grabbed Corey’s attention. She received the help she needed to overcome her disorder. “I went to doctors, got therapy. I realized I just wasted a year of my life,” she said.

It wasn't enough for this spirited young lady to just help herself; she wanted to do something to help others. “I know what I went through, and nobody deserves to go through that,” she said.

Corey plans to attend college, major in business, minor in psychology and open an inpatient center in the Las Vegas area to help people with eating disorders.

She also contacted the National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA) in Las Vegas and told the organization she wanted to host the first walk of its kind to raise awareness.
