LAS VEGAS -
Fifth graders at
are building dog houses in math class – applying their math skills to practical problems.
Steven Kelley, a teacher for 23 years, heads the program.
“We feel the experience they had paid off academically, as well as giving them those real-life experiences in the real world,” he said.
Kelley says his students are learning more than just math. Each dog house is named after a famous mathematician. The students have to learn and report about the mathematicians.
Once the dog houses are finished, they are auctioned off to help local animal rescues.
“I think it’s really awesome for us to learn about this and have fun, but for us to save an animal’s life, it's really nice,” said fifth grader Katie Rodriguez.
The program represents What’s Cool at School.
