Acts of Kindness recipients host weekend fundraisers

Posted: Updated:
LAS VEGAS - Two Acts of Kindness recipients are participating in fundraisers this weekend.

8 News NOW last month profiled Detective Chris Holman with the Henderson Police Department for his SM@RTConnections program.

The non-profit organization is a component of the Henderson Community Foundation. Detective Holman promotes Internet safety and anti-sexting awareness.

He puts together personalized free programs for organizations, including schools and community groups. Holman talks with students and adults, all on his own time, informing people of the trends he sees in law enforcement.

Holman strives to empower adults to become more Internet savvy.

“P
arents are doing the right thing. Technology is changing every day. Our kids are always one step ahead of us. Time to play catch up and get ahead of them,” he said.

If you would like to help the SM@RTConnections program, head to the Hero Bowl bowling tournament at the Wildfire Casino on April 27. The event takes place from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Organizers are encouraging companies to register five people per team.

They say this isn't your typical fundraiser.

“Fundraisers can be boring and dry,” said David Ortlipp with Leadership Henderson 2014. “We wanted to kick it up a notch. Basically, we're having a Hero Bowl. Dress as your favorite superhero."

Since alcohol will be served, the event is just for adults. Money raised benefits families through the SM@RTConnections program.

The other big fundraiser April 27 is for Baby’s Bounty, a non-profit organization that collects goods for babies born to disadvantaged parents.

Kim Amato,
an Acts of Kindness recipient, founded the organization. She helps moms and dads prepare for the arrival of their new baby.

Amato held a baby shower in October and collected new car seats, portable cribs, infant bath tabs, diapers, blankets, toiletries and other goods to get financially challenged families off to a good start.

This Sunday, Baby’s Bounty holds the “Oh Baby!” tea party and auction. The event takes place April 27 from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Mandarin Oriental Las Vegas.
