8 on Your Side warns about mystery shopper scam

Posted: Updated:
LAS VEGAS - Ever wonder if those mystery shopper job offers are the real deal? 8 on Your Side discovered many are legitimate, but even career mystery shoppers have to beware of fraudsters.

When Larae Terry gets online to check her e-mail, she's hopes to find an e-mail from DSG Associates, Inc. That's the mystery shopper company she works for and, as its website says, the company is the real deal.

For years, Terry has made good money with DSG Associates. The company contacts her via e-mail, she goes online, signs up, follows instructions and receives a payday.

“If I can bring in ten or twenty dollars of secret shop, it's great,” she said.

Her task can be as simple as buying a candy bar. She gets the details online on DSG’s website. Usually, she receives $50 to $100 per job.

Recently, she received an offer from a different company that offered a much bigger payday. All she had to do was wire money at a Walmart.

“I thought, gee, it pays two hundred dollars. That's really good. I could use it for gas right now,” she said.

The company sent her a check for $1,900. She was instructed to keep $200 and wire the rest. A few days later, her bank contacted her, because her account was overdrawn. That’s when she realized it was all a scam.

“I cried, and my bank did nothing. We had to make it up,” she said.

Terry says she hopes others learn from her experience, because mystery shopping pays when you use legitimate companies. At one point, she had five legitimate gigs offered to her - each paying approximately $50.

Legitimate mystery shoppers will never ask you to pay anything up front, and they will always be on a secure network.
