8 on Your Side: Companies monitor online shopping returns

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - If you love to shop online from sites that offer free returns, your shopping habits could end up costing you free shipping and free returns in the future.

Stores are monitoring shoppers who frequently return items. These shoppers buy a lot and return a lot, because there is no risk. They can return products free of charge.

These shoppers cost companies an estimated $375 billion each year. Many stores are fighting back. They are tracking online shoppers' habits through a company called AgilOne.

If a shopper is labeled a habitual returner, retailers will stop sending that shopper coupons, promotions and may even revoke his or her free shipping and returns. Some retailers will charge restocking fees.

So, the days of buying clothes and using your home as a dressing room may come to an end. Shoppers have little recourse, but there is a silver lining.

Companies that use the research do not just punish habitual offenders, they also reward good shoppers. You can certainly change your online shopping reputation at any time.
