Metro investigating deadly shooting at Wetlands Park

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- Metro Police are investigating a deadly shooting near the Clark County Wetlands Park on the eastern side of the Las Vegas valley.

According to police, officers were called to the area at around 4:14 p.m. Tuesday on a report of gunfire being heard in the area.

When officers arrived, they found a man with multiple gunshot wounds. He was declared dead at the scene.

Homicide detectives said a passerby didn't know the victim and was out enjoying the park, when he stumbled across the shooting scene.

Preliminary investigation shows the victim may have been seen walking on the trail a few minutes before the reports of possible gunfire.

"When officers arrived, they discovered a citizen standing over a deceased male, trying to give him CPR," Metro Lt. Ray Steiber said. "He walked up on this male and seen that he was injured, and he was doing what any good citizen would do and tried to save his life."

Visitors are surprised by the shooting. Bicyclist Chris Luna was with his friend, when they came across the murder scene. Luna said he visits the park once a month and thinks the park's openness and secluded spots may have been used to conceal the crime.

"Yeah, a little bit, especially in this area. It's nice, but, like I said, it's also very quiet. So, it could happen," Luna said. "It's a pretty good place to hide a body, and I would think, but there's a lot of people coming around, so it was going to get found eventually."

Police have not released a motive for the crime or suspect information.

This is the 21st homicide in Metro's jurisdiction so far this year.
