One driver in critical condition after crash on Desert Inn

LAS VEGAS -- A Las Vegas man is in critical condition after a crash along Desert Inn Road that shut down the super-arterial for several hours Tuesday.

According to police, 33-year-old Jason Gonzalez was driving his Acura RSX coupe westbound on Desert Inn Road just past Paradise Road and was behind a Mercedes Benz SL550 coupe driven by 66-year-old Darlene Mansbach.

When the Mercedes Benz slowed down, police say Gonzalez failed to slow down as well and smashed into the back of the Mercedes Benz.

The crash sent the two cars spinning. The Mercedes Benz came to rest on the sidewalk on the north side of the road. The car driven by Gonzalez also ran up onto the sidewalk but the left side of the car hit a lamp post, causing serious damage to the driver's side of the car.

Gonzalez was taken to University Medical Center in critical condition. Mansbach was taken to Sunrise Hospital with moderate injuries.

The crash happened at around noon, but Desert Inn Road did not reopen until around 5 p.m.
