Health District planning to lay off 10 percent of workforce

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- The Southern Nevada Health District will be laying off 10 percent of its workforce in an effort to save money in an effort to save $5 million.

The district's board made the move during its vote on a new budget Thursday. It is expected to impact 50 to 60 jobs from a workforce of about 515 people.

There is no word on which positions or how many jobs will be eliminated, although Chief Health Officer Joe Iser says most layoffs will come from the nursing and administration departments.

Iser says the agency suffered as property taxes declined and has been living with a budget shortfall for years.

He says he plans to eliminate the deficit over the next three years, but warns that will also mean reductions in service, such as fewer immunization clinics.

The agency has already whittled down some of a projected $10.5 million deficit by eliminating vacant positions and reducing travel.
