Karen Castro joined the 8 News Now team in Dec. 2013 as The Brighter Mornings' reporter.

Before making the move to Las Vegas, she worked in Yuma, Arizona for two years. Karen was first hired as the KSWT-TV assignment desk editor and quickly worked her way up to the anchor desk. She also covered immigration issues and often crossed the border into Mexico to report.

One of her most memorable stories was on undocumented people deported by bus through the Calexico Port of Entry, CA. Many of them end up stranded in the border town of Mexicali, MX because they are from other Latin American countries and had no money to go home. There are several shelters in Baja California that house stranded immigrants.

Karen graduated from Cal State Northridge in 2011 with a degree in broadcast journalism and a minor in Spanish-language journalism. While in college, she won several scholarships for her work for Valley View News, a weekly newscast produced by students. She was also a writer for her university's Spanish newspaper, El Nuevo Sol.

Karen was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA in the town of Silverlake. Both her parents are from El Salvador. They migrated north during the civil war in the 1980s.

Karen has two older siblings and a 15-year-old mix collie named Sochi.
