Acts of Kindness: Ray and Clare Biggerstaff

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - Ray Biggerstaff and his wife Clare are the parents of five wonderful children. They are natural parents to two of the children. The Biggerstaffs adopted a son and foster the other two children.

Ray and Clare know the importance and challenges of foster parenting, which is why they founded Foster Connect in 2006. Through the organization, the couple helps approximately 40 foster families across the valley.

"We visit each family about every eight weeks," Clare said. "We can track with their journey and the ups and downs, because every journey is a bumpy one."

Foster parent Elizabeth Howard thought her family was large with four kids. She and her husband now have nine. The journey always begins with uncertainty, but she says Ray and Clare offer help every step of the way.

"Ray and Clare are fabulous. You never know who's coming home from the hospital, boy or girl, how big or how small," she said.

Many foster kids show up with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

"Ray and Clare have access to a warehouse of goods. They will be there at a moment's notice. They have met us many a time on the way from the hospital," said Howard.

Carly Rush-Souza attends the regular meetings the couple hosts. The meetings offer her and other foster and adoptive parents the emotional support they need.

"They recruited us to be foster parents, and five of our children we have adopted through the foster care system - all because of them and their example," she said.

8 News NOW is rewarding the Biggerstaffs, awarding them $800 as part of its weekly series Acts of Kindness. The couple already has big plans for the money.

"We're actually saving for a bigger vehicle. We have a seven-passenger van which fits us all snuggly in. We're saving for something bigger. We can go out of town, have room for another child," said Clare.
