Political Blitz Turning Voters Off?

(Oct. 28) -- With five days to go before the general election, the election blitz isn't slowing down but ratcheting up. The political parties want high voter turn out; instead they may be turning voters off.

In an election year that will be a fight to the finish, the political war continues with neither side willing to surrender. "We're absolutely getting a lot of attention right now; Nevada is a very important swing state in this election." Nevada Democratic Spokesman Jon Summers oversees the phone banks; hundreds of calls everyday pushing voters to vote.

Clark County Republican Chairman Brian Scroggins is doing the same. "We're expecting Republicans to get out, Democrats and Independents to all vote for the President. We need all their help to get the President back in the White House for another four years."

TV commercials, radio commercials, phone calls, and now an avalanche of political mail -- Las Vegas Postmaster Michael Martino says,  "We are delivering anywhere from seven to fourteen up to twenty different mailings a day." All the political mail is doubling the workload at the main Las Vegas Post Office. Instead of handling two million pieces of mail a day, the total is now four million a day.

Registered voter Carol Ann Green is sick of it. "We need to put a trash can out here next to the mailbox." Yesterday she went to the mailbox and pulled out 12 pieces of election mail. "This close to the election, if you haven't made a decision a piece of paper isn't going to make a decision for you."

And about those phone banks, Carol Ann has turned off her phone. She's heard enough. "Fifty-three phone calls that were all political ads." The plan to drive voters to the polls in droves may instead drive them away; Carol Ann is already sick of Election Day and it's not even here yet. "I have asked and asked and asked please quit calling."

Both the Republican and Democratic parties say they'll continue their information campaigns from now through Election Day hoping to get every registered voter to the polls.
