Acts of Kindness: Connie Quarrells

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - Connie Quarrells says she loves being a crossing guard at Robert Taylor Elementary School.

"I enjoy it. It's not a job. It keeps me healthy, and it keeps me going," she said.

The nearby community in Henderson is her family. While she may not know everybody's name, she knows something about each of them.

"(I) let them know that other people care about them. That's what I do," she said. "A smile, a wave or, ‘How you doing?' – sometimes, I can tell by the way they walk or how they look, they might need a hug. Some of them don't have clothes, and it's cold. I might buy them a coat or something."

Her neighbor Gloria Salas says Quarrells is always thinking of others.

"She has brought shoes to kids. She took a mother to the DMV. She took a family of kids to McDonald's, because the mother had to go to the doctor and wouldn't be back in time," Salas said.

The kids realize it too. They have written essays about her, and they often bring her gifts.

8 News NOW is rewarding Connie Quarrells with this week's Acts of Kindness award of $800. If you wish to nominate someone for Acts of Kindness, visit our website or e-mail us.
