8 on Your Side Breaks Down Cell Phone Plans

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - Finding the best cell phone plan with the best value can be challenging. Many carriers have changed their plans and are offering some enticing deals.

Ever wonder which cell phone carrier offers you the best bang for your buck? 8 on Your Side is getting past the sales pitch and dissecting several cell phone plans.

AT&T's new family plan gives a family of four unlimited calls and texts, plus 10 gigabytes of data for $160 a month. The catch is that you have to pay full price for your phone on this plan. Phones at full price can cost hundreds of dollars. If you sign up for a two-year contract, however, you can get your phone at a discounted price.

T-Mobile, meanwhile, recently did away with contracts, but the company requires you pay full price for a new phone. You can arrange to make monthly payments on your phone, but if you cancel your service at T-Mobile, which you can do at anytime, you still have to pay off the balance on your phone.

Sprint offers contracts or family plans. The company calls them "framily" plans, because anyone can be included on them.

Sprint offers the service as a group rate. The carrier provides separate bills to all users. It also gives you unlimited data and annual upgrades for $45 a month.

There is a catch, however. You have to pay full price for your smart phone. Current Sprint customers who want to switch to the "framily" plan have to pay an extra $15 per month until their contract is up.

Verizon offers a two-year contract with a discounted price for your new smart phone. Most Verizon smart phone plans charge approximately $100 a month with 2 gigabytes of data. The carrier's family plan for four people will cost $260 a month with 10 gigabytes of data.

Verizon also offers "The Edge Plan". That lets you buy a smart phone with monthly payments during two years.

Ultimately, shoppers should find the best, cheapest plan that suits their needs. The plans are similar, so savings are minimal.
