Coroner says 5-month-old baby died from asphyxia

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- The Clark County Coroner's Office has ruled that the cause of death for a 5-month-old baby boy is positional asphyxia, which means his breathing was obstructed when he became wedged between an air mattress and a wall.

Police were called to an apartment near Mountain Vista Street and Twain Avenue Feb. 28 on a report that a baby was unresponsive.

When medical personnel arrived, they found the baby boy, later identified as Jayden Leech, unresponsive and transported him to Sunrise Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Safety advocates, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, remind parents and caretakers that infants should sleep in their own cribs or bassinets and not with an adult. Cosleeping increases the risk of suffocation or strangulation.

Also, do not place anything in a crib or bassinet that might obstruct breathing, like plush toys, blankets, pillows or bumper pads.

Remove items like cords, ties or ribbons that can wrap around a baby's neck.
