Child Among Latest of 18 Flu Deaths in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- The Southern Nevada Health District says the number of flu-related deaths in the Las Vegas area is up to 18.

District spokeswoman Jennifer Sizemore said Monday that the death of one child under age 4 is being blamed on this year's flu.

Five adults ages 25 to 49, five people ages 50 to 64, and seven adults over age 65 have died.

Health district officials say people who think they may have the flu should be careful not to spread it.

"Just stay home. Washing your hands really well and don't rub your eyes, that's the quickest way to transfer things," said Linh Nguyen with the health district.

There have been more than 440 cases of flu reported in the Las Vegas area since October, including 200 that required hospitalization. While flu season generally peaks in February, health officials say it is not too late to get a flu shot.

The predominant flu strain this year is H1N1. That's the strain that killed more than 150,000 people worldwide in 2009.
