Acts of Kindness: Diana England

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - Diana England was born and raised in Las Vegas, and she's always had a passion for helping animals.

When this mother of two reached a significant milestone in her life, she decided to put that passion into action.

"It's when I turned fifty. I just decided that I needed to do something that really mattered, not just sit back and say nothing about all the dogs that die every year," she said.

In 2009, England created the non-profit A Home 4 Spot. Every day, the organization rescues animals scheduled to be euthanized by an area animal shelter.

"We get those. We train them, take care of all the medical, whatever else needs to be done, put them in foster homes, get them adopted out," she said.

So far, England says A Home 4 Spot has saved 1,900 dogs. "Last year alone, we did seventy eight thousand dollars in surgeries from dogs from Lied (Animal Shelter)," she said.

England and her volunteers hold adoptions with these animals several times a week and get the word out about their animals through social media.

Tammi Stay needed a dog that would not pull her or her husband out of their wheelchairs. They say they are extremely thankful for A Home 4 Spot for rescuing a bichon poo named Sadie who has added so much to their lives.

"We went over. We met her, and it was love at first sight. She jumped up on my lap, and I was sold. I literally started crying, because she was just such a sweetheart," Stay said. "They have to take these animals that have been broken, out, lost. They rehabilitate them, give them love, and they save them."

England recently reached another milestone in her life. After 30 years as a manicurist, she quit her job to run A Home 4 Spot full-time.

"I just quit my job yesterday, decided that's it. I've got to do this one hundred percent of the time," she said.

8 News NOW is rewarding Diana England's efforts, awarding her $800 as part of its weekly series Acts of Kindness. If you wish to nominate someone for Acts of Kindness, visit our website or e-mail us.
