LAS VEGAS -- The intersection of Charleston and Lamb Boulevards in the eastern valley continues to cement its reputation as one of the most dangerous traffic crossings under the jurisdiction of Metro Police.

In Metro's latest Traffic Bureau update it was reported that the Charleston-Lamb intersection had 20 injury collisions between Aug. 1 and Feb. 4, by far the most in the valley. This is not exactly a new phenomenon.

When 8 News NOW reported on the top intersections for collisions from Jan. 1 through May 15, 2012, Charleston-Lamb topped that list as well. It reached the point that Metro announced in March 2013 that it would begin targeting that intersection to nab motorists who commit traffic infractions.

This happens to be one of the most heavily traveled intersections in the valley outside the Las Vegas Strip corridor, with an estimated 54,000 vehicles a day crossing Lamb on Charleston, according to the latest traffic data from the Nevada Department of Transportation.

What the other top intersections for collisions have in common with Charleston-Lamb are wide thoroughfares with speed limits generally in the 40- to 45-mile-an-hour range. They also each have at least 43,500 vehicles a day passing through the intersection in at least one direction.

Tropicana Avenue at both Pecos Road and Rainbow Boulevard accounted for 11 injury collisions, and Tropicana at Decatur Boulevard had 10 injury collisions.

Rainbow at Sahara Avenue also accounted for 10 injury collisions to round out the top five. This western valley intersection has been tagged as problematic for many years, with the State Farm insurance company having declared in 1998 that it was the nation's ninth most dangerous intersection.
