Several Companies Announce Job Hiring in Las Vegas

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- Nevada still has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country, but more jobs are coming to southern Nevada.

On Wednesday, Home Depot announced it's hiring hundreds of seasonal workers in Las Vegas and that's not the only company hiring.

Corwyn Frierson has been working at the Home Depot for almost 12 years.

"It's been really good to me. I started as a part-time associate in the hardware department," Frierson said.

He's worked his way up to assistant manager at the Eastern and Serene avenues location. With the spring rush around the corner, he's looking to fill about 40 or 50 positions at this store alone.

"We have cashiers, sales associates, specialists. It really depends on individual store needs," Frierson said.

Not far away in Henderson, Hire Live held a sales and management job fair at Sunset Station.

"We're going to have over 200 candidates today with the 11 companies that are here," said Dan Sparks, vice president of sales for Hire Live.

One of those companies is Verizon Wireless.

"We are looking today to really find some very dynamic salespeople that want to work for a Fortune 15 company and grow," said Lisa Rojas, human resources, Verizon Wireless.

While there is some improvement in the job market, there are still a lot of people unemployed. McKinzie Weiss, a recent psychology graduate from Liberty University, hasn't had much luck.

"It's rough out there. There's not a whole lot of jobs out there, so I'm trying every opportunity I can get."

Manpower, an employment agency, expects 13 percent growth in employment in the western region this quarter.

"Month over month, really for the past three years, we've seen improvements," said Brian Wolf, a manager at Manpower.

Currently, Manpower is looking to fill about 250 positions across Las Vegas.

"We've got positions open in a variety of different verticals and industries, long-term and short-term. We got quite a few opportunities now, more so than we've seen really in the past year," Wolf said.

This is always a busy time of year at Home Depot. While springtime symbolizes new life and growth, the job market could be starting its own transformation.

Hire Live will hold another job fair Thursday, Feb. 13. It's at the Suncoast, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Applicants should wear business clothing.
