Acts of Kindness: Teen Radio Host Up for National Honor

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - Sixteen-year-old Corey Taylor is garnering a lot of attention these days for her anti-bullying radio program. The program is broadcast out of Las Vegas Thursday evenings and has a global audience.

8 News NOW featured Taylor in October for its Acts of Kindness segment. She was also named in Las Vegas Weekly as one of 14 people to watch this year.

Now, she's up for a national award: the Charlotte Bacon Acts of Kindness Award.

"They look for people across the country, spreading kindness. They contacted me. I couldn't believe it. I didn't even know this award was going on," she said. "It's an incredible honor."

The award was founded in memory of Charlotte Bacon, a victim of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy. It was established to foster a kindness mindset in children and recognize special kids who complete acts of kindness.

"Those kids were just five years old. I just still can't even believe it, the ones who lost their lives too soon," Taylor said. "I just really want to spread kindness in their honor, so I just want the families to know that. I really want to be there."

Taylor is competing against thousands of nominees, but has been told she is one of the top contenders.

Times are tight for her family, however. She used the money 8 News NOW awarded her in October to keep her Corey Taylor Talks radio show on the air. Her mother Niki Miniaci, who works full-time and raises Taylor alone, says she can't afford to fly her daughter to the east coast.

"One thousand dollars is insane to me, but to a lot of people - God bless them - it's a write-off," Miniaci said. "They can say it's going to Newtown, Connecticut."

Learn How You Can Help Corey Taylor Finance Her Trip

Miniaci has contacted several airlines and corporations, but so far, hasn't received any assistance. The award will be presented February 22nd.

"I'm hoping with such an impact she's doing, someone will help her get back there, to say, ‘Hey, we do care about this tragedy and those children, and we are proud of this Las Vegas girl that's going on, fighting and bucking the system to make things change,'" she said.
