LAS VEGAS - Viewers ask why Cashman Middle School's school zone flashing lights remain in operation as late as 5 p.m.
State law mandates school zones are in effect from 30 minutes before school begins until 30 minutes after school gets out. Operation times for school zones are programmed in a database and communicated wirelessly through antennas installed at each school.
Flasher times change depending on the school schedule. The flasher times can change, for example, if a school has a half-day or at the request of the Clark County School District.
The reason the school flashers at Cashman Middle School are in operation at 5 p.m. is because of its after school program. The principal requested the school zone lights from 4:45 p.m. until 5:15 p.m. for the safety of the 300 students who participate.
Drivers should proceed slowly when that zone is in effect.
