Man Indicted for Murder in Shooting Death

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- A Clark County grand jury indicted a Las Vegas man on one count of murder in connection with the shooting death of a man earlier this month.

The grand jury indicted Raul Gonzales on one count of murder in the shooting death of 35-year-old Eric Paul Montoya. According to Metro Police, Gonzales went to Montoya's home on White Skies Court, which is near Nellis Boulevard and Owens Avenue, in the early morning of Jan. 14 and fired four shots through the door.

Montoya was on the other side of the door and was hit twice. He was taken to the hospital and died from his wounds later in the day.

Gonzales told police that he had set up with Montoya to rob a taco vendor the morning of the shooting. However, when Montoya didn't show up for their meeting, he felt that Montoya was setting him up to be beaten. So, he decided to shoot him first.

The jury also indicted Gonzales on child abuse and neglect counts because four children were in the home at the time of the shooting.

The judge set no bail and set the next court date for Feb. 11.

Police say Gonzales is a known gang member who has been convicted of several felonies. He had two active felony cases against him at the time of shooting.

Police also say Gonzales was dating one of the victim's nieces.
