Nearly 300,000 Tourists Expected for Big Game

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - While the Super Bowl is being played in New Jersey, Las Vegas will welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors who will come to town to watch and bet on the big game.

An estimated 292,000 people will visit Las Vegas this weekend for Super Bowl events. That nearly matches the number of visitors in town for New Year's Eve. Those tourists are expected to bring in $113 million in non-gaming revenue.

Heidi Hayes with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority says Las Vegas offers perks that can't be found at the actual game.

"I think coming to Las Vegas to watch the game is better than going to New York," she said. "They're going to be in the cold. They're going to be outside. You can come here. You can pick a myriad of different places to watch the game, and you can have a great view of the game on a big screen TV. So, I think Las Vegas is better than going to the actual game."

Despite that large number of tourists, the LVCVA says the Super Bowl isn't the biggest sports weekend in Las Vegas. More people will come to the valley for the NCAA Men's College Basketball Tournament, which begins in March.
