One-Man Play Explores School Bullying

LAS VEGAS -- The Smith Center is hosting a one-man play about a young boy from Australia who is a victim of bullying. The message behind "I Am Jack" is one that is universal.

Around 2,000 local students from fourth to eighth grade will get an opportunity to see the play which is based on a true story. It's a story that resonates with children around the world. Actor Tim McGarry portrays an 11-year-old boy who is smart and funny but traumatized by a bully at school.

Grace Morgando, a 12-year-old in the audience took in every word.  She says she went through a similar experience at school.

"It really hurts and you feel like no one can really do anything about it," she said.

The show sends a message to children that there is something they can do if they are the victim of a bully.

"As a parent you never think that could be your child," said Cheryl Nelson, Clark County School District counselor.

She says the play also teaches parents what to look out for when their children are tormented in school.

"Suddenly kids who are enjoying school don't want to go. They stay by themselves," Nelson said.

The play is based on a book written by Susanne Gervay about her son Jack. He is now an adult, but when he was younger he suffered with bullying that was so severe he considered taking his life. She said she missed some of the early warning signs.

"He tried to tell me, but I didn't see the signs until I was told," she said.

Grace Morgando, a seventh grader at Indian Springs Middle School said, like Jack, she found the courage to tell her parents. She also chose to stay positive about it.

"I keep my head up, turn the other cheek," she said.

"I Am Jack" is part of the Smith Center's education outreach program. The play is free to the students, but not open to the public.
