Voter Registration Lawsuit Update

(Oct. 19) -- There are new developments in the case of a man who claims he registered as a democrat and his form was thrown away. The man, whose name is Dwight, told Eyewitness News Monday that his parents registered as republicans and he registered as a democrat. But his form was never turned in.

Tuesday, that story changed. His parents did not register as republicans, but he still maintains his form was not turned in.

The organization Voices for Working Families has been assisting people who feel their voter rights were ignored. But now the organization admits one man's story has changed. "I would say it would have been wise for Dwight to talk to his parents before he made these claims," said Andres Rameriz.

The group says their main focus is Dwight and his accusations that his voter registration was thrown away. Rameriz continues, "As far as we're concerned, Dwight registered in early August. His form was not turned in. They took away his right to vote. It's not about Republicans or Democrats it's about people's right to vote in the election cycle."

Brian Scroggins, with the Republican Party, said, "His parents are registered as democrats and they were registered by a republican organization so that's proof we're not throwing away democrat forms at all."

The Republican Party maintains it's doing everything it can to get everyone registered no matter what their political affiliation is.

Voices for Working Families touts itself as a non-partisan group. Its director, Andres Rameriz, admits though he is a democrat and active in the Democratic Party. He says it's that experience that helps him run the organization.

"It's virtually unheard of, or you to find a political operative to run organizations who haven't participated in partisan campaigns. You don't have high profile non-partisan campaigns when you're looking to hire people you're looking to hire people with experience," Rameriz said.

Voices for Working Families says Dwight is planning on filing the lawsuit as early as Wednesday.
