LAS VEGAS  -- An outing at the Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort took a tragic and deadly turn Tuesday. Christopher Ruby, 20, took a hard fall that caused his death.

It's the first accidental death of its kind in the resort's 51-year history on Mount Charleston. Ruby was an experienced snowboarder and a familiar and well-liked person around the resort.

He died at University Medical Center after the incident midday Tuesday.

"It was a very unfortunate tragedy that affected all of us. The ski community in Vegas is a fairly small, close-knit community, and he was a local," said Kevin Stickelman, the president and general manager of the Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort.

Resorts officials asked the media to not speak with patrons, but Stickelman explained what happened.

"He was riding on some terrain in our park off of our Chair 2, which is one of our lifts that serves intermediate and advanced terrain."

Ruby, while riding his snowboard, fell.

"Our ski patrollers were on site of the accident within one minute of receiving the report," Stickelman said.

Ruby was air-lifted to UMC trauma. The coroner says the cause of death was "blunt chest trauma" and ruled his passing as accidental.

"Yesterday's accident was one person. It didn't involve any other people. It didn't involve a collision with any objects. It was a fall that was not recoverable," Stickelman said.

All day, friends of Chris Ruby expressed their sorrow on his Facebook page. He may be gone, but they all take comfort knowing he died doing what he loved.

Stickelman says they've had some people die from medical episodes and one teen was killed in an avalanche in 2005, but no one has died in this manner. The resort says skiing and snowboarding is a very safe sport and deaths are rare.

Officials from the resort issued a statement saying staff members were devastated by the accident, and their thoughts and prayers were with Ruby's family.
