County Names New Head of Water Agency

LAS VEGAS -- Clark County commissioners have named John Entsminger as the new head of the  the Las Vegas Valley Water District.

He will replace Pat Mulroy who is retiring. Entsminger is the second-in-command at the water district and the Southern Nevada Water Authority and he was Mulroy's choice for the job. Some had wanted to see a nationwide search for what is considered one of the most powerful positions in Nevada.

After Clark County Commissioner Larry Brown withdrew his name Monday as a potential successor, it left Entsminger as the only candidate. He comes with a track record of 15 years working on southern Nevada's water needs.

The Tuesday commission meeting began with confusion. Initially, commissioners were planning to delay the vote, but legal counsel advised them they could vote and ratify the vote at a later date. The ratification will take place on Jan. 21.

In a unanimous decision, Entsminger was accepted to take the top spot.

"I think our community is on track to continue to conserve more water," he said.

Commission Mary Beth Scow said she didn't think a nationwide search could produce a better candidate than Entsminger.

Over the years, Entsminger has led negotiations over water from the Colorado River and drafted treaties with Mexico. He says the valley's conservation efforts have helped offset any short term drought issues.

"I think one of the big decisions we'll have to make in the water district is how are we going to adapt to a new role? For 20 years, probably 25 years, this agency has been supporting growth. We've been building new facilities and acquiring new resources. As we evolve into more of an operation and maintenance entity, we're going to have to make sure we're ready for that new mission," Entsminger.

The county contract has not been written so there is no decision on how much money Entsminger will make. His predecessor, Pat Mulroy, was making more than $300,000 as head of the water district and the Southern Nevada Water Authority, which is a separate entity. A decision is expected to be announced next week that Entsminger will also lead the water authority.
