LAS VEGAS -- Every year at the stroke of midnight, the race to be the new year's baby begins. This year, the first baby of 2014 arrived in the Las Vegas valley just a few minutes into the new year.

Little Danika Ruth Cox came into the world two minutes into the new year at St. Rose Dominican Hospital's Siena Campus.

"The first thing the doctor said was she is beautiful and she has a lot of hair," said Maggie Cox.

As fireworks blasted into the night sky, the little girl made her appearance a week before her due date of Jan. 8.

"When they held her up she was a little smaller than I expected. She has been so active. I just expected a big boy," Maggie Cox said.

Maggie and Clinton Cox, had no idea they were having a girl. In fact, they didn't even have a girl's name picked out until five hours before her arrival.

"We picked Danika. Actually we changed the name about 7 o'clock last night. For a week it was going to be Olivia," Clinton Cox said.

Danika means flower and Ruth, a family name, means friend. A fitting name for such a sweet bundle of joy who is full of life and purity on the first day of 2014.

Danika has two brothers and a sister to welcome her home. Mom says she can't wait to start buying all things pink for her little girl.
