Family, Friends Remember Teen Killed in Hit-and-Run Crash

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- Family and friends gathered Saturday evening to remember the life of a teen who died after a driver hit him and took off.

Alex Martinez, 15, was driving a moped with a friend the day after Christmas when the accident happened near the intersection Sahara Ave. and Nellis Blvd. Metro Police are still looking for the person who hit and killed Martinez and then left the scene.

The teens loved ones now light the spot where he died with a sea of candles, cards and pictures. Many left messages for Martinez on a board at the memorial site.

Some chose to share a memory, while others said goodbye.

Alysia Martinez, Alex's sister, said her brother was very outgoing and loved adventure.

"He was always listening to music and always riding his bike up and down the streets," Alysia Martinez said.

The scene at the vigil was very different from the night Martinez died. It was so dark, police officers said witnesses could barely see what happened. Metro Police investigators said the hit-and-run driver did not leave any physical evidence behind.

"Even if he did do it and ran away, because he was afraid of the consequences, I think he should turn himself in because my brother lost his life," Alysia Martinez said.

Even those who didn't know Martinez personally turned up to show support for his family. Many said what the family is going through is unimaginable.

"To lose a child is a tragedy," said Patricia Houle, a work colleague of Martinez's mother. "I have two children of my own. I can't imagine losing one of them."

While family members tried to stay strong, many couldn't stop the tears from flowing. Alysia Martinez said her brother would have been grateful to all that turned up to help his family through this tough time.

"He would just like be here smiling and saying thank you to everyone for being here," Alysia Martinez said.

Amid the darkness, and the questions that surround his death, Alysia Martinez said Martinez is leaving behind a light that can never be put out.

For those that would like to help the Martinez family pay for funeral expenses, a bank account has been set up through Wells Fargo. Anyone can go to any Wells Fargo location and drop off checks made out to the "Alex Martinez Memorial Fund". The account number is 1256018258.

There will also be a car wash fundraiser Sunday, Dec. 28 at Abuelas Tacos near Sahara Ave. and Lamb Blvd. from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. All contributions will help the Martinez Family.
