Las Vegas History Instructor Named NV Teacher of Year

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- A Las Vegas high school history instructor has been named Nevada's 2014 Michael Landsberry Teacher of the Year.

State superintendent Dale Erquiaga announced Wednesday that Jeffrey Hinton had taken the top honor.

Hinton has taught at Northwest Career and Technical Academy since 2008. He teaches U.S. history, world history and the history of rock and roll, in addition to chairing the school's social studies department.

Erquiaga says Hinton has a passion for teaching that motivates his student to become lifelong learners.

Hinton is a graduate of the College of Southern Nevada and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Hinton says his background in the military lends itself to what he does in the classroom.

"What I wanted to do is to lead by example, and that's a Marine Corps ethos that we hold true. I can't expect anyone to do anything that I wasn't willing to do or have done myself. I set out to be the best teacher I could so my message would have substance," Hinton said.

Hinton conveys his philosophy of teacher in his blog called the Reform-Minded Teacher. In the blog, he shares ideas about how to improve education in Nevada and communication between teachers and parents.

The teacher of the year award was recently renamed in honor of Michael Landsberry, a math teacher who died in October while trying to stop a shooter at Sparks Middle School.
