Free Dental Care Offered for Southern Nevadans in Need

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- Dozens of people received free dental care Friday at a local dental office.

Nevada has the second highest rate of uninsured in the nation.

Dental work can cost hundreds of dollars, but it is priceless for people pouring all their resources into feeding, clothing and caring for their families.

At Sedation Dental Care, crowds were thick and smiles were big for free dental work. For some people, like Alex and Bella, it was the first time seeing a dentist.

"It was a really good way to get them to be acquainted with the dentist and feel good coming here," their mother Nicole Silva said.

The two kids needed cleanings, but Jason Marsh had a more serious problem. An abscessed tooth that he desperately needed pulling.

"It starts to swell and you get pain and sometimes you can't even breathe," Marsh said.

Marsh and Silva are just two of 500,000 Nevadans who are uninsured.

Dr. Kayla Mai typically sees people at their worst.

"We actually have patients referred by the hospital and their swollen up here and it becomes life threatening by the time they see us. So, they waited that long partially because of fear, but some people is a true money problem," Mai said.

Mai says insurance isn't always top priority.

"There is definitely a big need for medical and dental and I think if the medical community could do the same thing as we do. It would really change the lives of the whole community," she said.

Until then, you can see a difference, one smile at a time.

"Just what I needed right at the good time. So, I was very thankful," Marsh said.

The state-run health care exchange says a number of people are using the site to sign up for dental care.
