NEW YORK -- Time magazine announced Wednesday it has selected Pope Francis as its Person of the Year.

Time managing editor Nancy Gibbs cited Pope Francis' willingness to take on controversial topics such as wealth and poverty, fairness and justice, the nature of marriage and globalization.

The pope beat out U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, Syrian leader Bashar Assad, gay rights advocate Edith Windsor and NSA leaker Edward Snowden to claim the honor.
