Acts of Kindness: Laverne Croucher

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - Eighty-nine-year-old Laverne Croucher is sharp, spry and full of spirit.

"I feel like forty or fifty, and then my body starts crying," she said.

Croucher says she does not plan to slow down. She runs the Loving Hands Sewing Ministry.

Twenty four years ago, her husband converted what used to be the patio in the back of their Las Vegas home into a sewing center. She collects boxes of gently used clothing, shoes and toys and transforms them into gifts for hundreds of children.

"I don't do anything half way. That's why this has almost gotten beyond me," she said. "My passion is needy children. They're innocent victims in this world. They can't help what happens. I vow I'm going to take care of them ‘till the day I die. If I have to sew twenty four hours a day, give up eating."

The sheds at the back of her property are filled with items that will soon be distributed to area churches. Croucher says plenty of work still needs to be done. She says she's in desperate need of two things: denim and volunteers.

"I'm trying to find a company online where I can get a good deal on denim. All kids want are jeans, but I can't afford denim," she said.

"What's with all you older women? Do you play bridge all the time? Give up a couple of hours. There are thing you can do that I need help with, to free me up to do the sewing," she said.

8 News NOW is rewarding her efforts, awarding her $800 as part of its weekly series Acts of Kindness. If you wish to nominate someone for Acts of Kindness, visit our website or e-mail us.
