Acts of Kindness: Midge Sparlin

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - Midge Sparlin is spreading a little holiday cheer to local veterans, one blanket at a time.

She started making blankets last year that she could give to homeless veterans. Each blanket takes about three hours to make. She created almost 150 blankets, spending nearly $2,000. For Sparlin, it's a small price to pay.

"I'm a four-time cancer survivor. I'm going to pay everything forward when I get well," she said. "I just thank God everyday I'm able to do it."

Sparlin received her last treatment approximately 18 years ago. Her husband passed away at around that time. He was a veteran, so she started volunteering at the Las Vegas U.S Veterans Office.

"I could see a lot of them were really down and sad. Anything like this makes them so happy," she said.

It's not just at the veterans office where she spreads joy with her soft, plush blankets.

"I took sixty of them to Children's Cancer Ward. I also donated a bunch to Ronald McDonald House, to the little ones. It's something that I will always do," she said.

She also inspired her family to take part. Her granddaughter Ashley Winter helps pass out blankets.

8 News NOW is rewarding Midge Sparlin's efforts, awarding her $800 as part of its weekly series Acts of Kindness.
