Dr. Nicholas J. Vogelzang of Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada released the following statement regarding the money he has received from drug companies.
"With more than 30 years of involvement in cancer research, I am often called on to participate in scientific meetings (SWOG, ASCO and KCA) where the pharmaceutical companies want expert opinions from fellow clinical researchers. The majority of my honoraria are for these meetings, and on occasion I will also speak to a group of medical professionals as part of the trip. These meetings are typically regional and have taken place in Salt Lake City, Denver and Phoenix.
Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada is involved in more than 170 clinical trials annually, not only through pharmaceutical companies but also through affiliations with UCLA and The US Oncology Network, all of which focus on developing new drugs to fight various cancers. We prescribe medicine and treatment plans that are best for the patients, and in the oncology world there are very few alternatives when it comes to drug options. Because we have access and work closely in these clinical trials, I do disclose to patients that I participated in the development of the particular drug with the producing company."
