Man Accused of Police Plot Can Act as Attorney

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- A Clark County judge says a Las Vegas man accused of plotting to kidnap and kill a police officer can act as his own attorney.

Clark County District Court Judge Elissa Cadish ruled Wednesday that David Allen Brutsche can represent himself during his upcoming trial.

During a court hearing in August, Brutsche rejected a public defender deciding to represent himself.

In a hearing in October, the suspect refused to enter a plea because he said the court did not have authority over him.

Brutsche and Devon Campbell Newman were arrested in August after a four-month investigation. Police say they planned to kidnap a random police officer, try him or her on treason charges, convict the officer and execute the officer.

Police say the two are part of the Sovereign Citizens' Movement.

Their trail date is set for Dec. 9.
