Black Friday Creeps into Thanksgiving Day

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - If it seems like holiday shopping is beginning to impose on the actual holidays, it is. Forget Black Friday. Big box retail stores like Old Navy, Target and Staples are keeping their doors open during Thanksgiving in hopes shoppers will ditch the dinner table for big deals.

'Tis the season and Thanksgiving is still weeks away, but already the look of Christmas has arrived. Town Square is decking the halls of its outdoor mall and installing snow machines to give its enormous tree more of a white Christmas feel, despite the 77-degree weather. Holiday sales have also begun.

"It's crazy, it's very busy, it's very crowded, it's very aggressive," shopper Janie Balista said.

She and her daughter, Sarah, go Black Friday shopping every year. Typically, in past year, retailers have opened at midnight with super sales to draw in customers. This year, Thanksgiving falls on Nov. 28, meaning there are six fewer shopping days than last year. More retailers are trying to get a jump on the season and opening on the actual holiday.

List of Retailers Opening on Thanksgiving Day

"I'm not sure I like that. I like the idea of the employees being able to spend all of Thanksgiving with their family. I think Black Friday should be Black Friday," shopper Autumn Lamar said.

Clothing retailer H&M will be open Thanksgiving between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Old Navy will be open at 9 a.m. but close between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

David Stefaniak of Kettlemucks Toy Shoppe in Henderson is sticking with tradition and opening just one hour earlier on Friday at 9 a.m.

"We're a family-owned business, we're family-oriented. Thanksgiving is for families. It's not for retail," he said.

Kettlemucks is home to toys that run without batteries, like the popular Stomp Rocket.

"We probably sell 500 a year."

According to the National Retail Federation, the holiday season can represent as much as 40 percent of their business for the year. Even so, Kettlemucks will be sticking with tradition and staying closed on the holiday.
