City Stops Fremont St. Liquor Store Applications, For Now

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS -- The Las Vegas City Council voted Wednesday to freeze applications for new package liquor stores along Fremont Street for the next six months.

The council decided to stop new liquor stores from opening because people are not following the open container law, which allows people to drink alcoholic beverages bought at a bar, but not bottles of liquor from a liquor store within 1,000 feet of that or any other liquor store.

Las Vegas City Attorney Brad Jerbic says during the moratorium, the city can figure out how to address the problem and will decide if it will allow new liquor stores on the street period.

"We're seeing volume and price-tipping point. You can buy a lot of liquor for a lot less money and get a lot drunker, a lot quicker and that leads to crime issues and public safety issues," Jerbic said.

City leaders say liquor stores already on Fremont Street are cooperating to work toward a solution.

The freeze on applications comes just a few months after the city instituted a curfew for kids in downtown entertainment district.
