Acts of Kindness: Beatrice Roche

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - Beatrice Roche is an extremely humble and giving woman. She devotes a big part of her life volunteering at Valley Hospital.

Roche is 78-years-old. Her dear friend June Oak is a young 86-years-old. The two women visit Valley Hospital every week as volunteers with the Hope Chaplaincy – a tradition that began 40 years ago.

"We're just trying to encourage people when they're ill, so they can get better," said Roche.

Every week for forty years, the women offer encouragement to patients and staff at Valley Hospital.

"I thank you for that. This has been quite an experience. This has been a wake-up call," one patient told the women.

"Some people will talk a little longer than others. We try to bring out with them what their needs are. Sometimes, it's not just sickness, but being homeless on the street," Roche said.

Roche has opened her own home to some of those less fortunate, changing the lives of people like Jennifer Herron for the better.

"They took me in, helped me get back on my feet," she said. "(Roche's) taught me how to be a lady again."

8 News NOW is rewarding Beatrice Roche's efforts, awarding her $800 as part of its weekly series Acts of Kindness.
