Cool at School: SpringStone Montessori Gathers Donations

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS - Among the collections of cute little ghouls, goblins, spiders and other scary stuff lies a large box. It isn't there to frighten, but to enlighten and help.

Halloween night at SpringStone Montessori School had no shortage of trick-or-treaters or candy.

This night also had plenty of heart and empathy. The school asked trick-or-treaters to donate in-demand items to Shade Tree, the valley non-profit that helps abused women and their children find a safe place to get their lives back together.

"Part of the curriculum is to teach values about giving," said SpringStone Montessori Director Ann Fitzgerald.

One six-year-old, who dressed as a pirate, showed he values charity as much as plunder. "It's nice to help. It makes me feel good," he said.

Braxton Webster dressed as a character from "Rise of the Guardians". He is also all about collecting candy as well as donations.

"They don't have clothes. They don't have all types of stuff. They don't have Halloween costumes. They don't have money. They don't have food," he said.

This was the second year for Springstone Montessori's Halloween donation drive. "It's the message about paying it forward, paying it forward in life and helping out those less fortunate than us," Fitzgerald said.
