LAS VEGAS - A viewer asks why no flashing school zone lights exist on Charleston Boulevard near West Career and Technical Academy. The viewer says vehicles speed through the area as students walk to and from school.
The viewer says he's witnessed vehicles heading towards Red Rock Canyon traveling at 50 to 60 miles per hour. He says he has also seen students speeding so they can make a u-turn a quarter mile up the road, avoiding traffic that turns into the school.
Traffic8 first contacted Metro Police to see if the department can increase enforcement in the area. Second, Traffic8 asked the Nevada Department of Transportation, which maintains this section of Charleston Boulevard, to install school flashers that warn drivers to slow down. NDOT has not yet replied to that request.
Clark County, meanwhile, controls nearby Desert Foothills Drive. The county will install school flashers on Desert Foothills south of Charleston. The project just started, and the flashers will be activated by the end of year.
